The Libyan Desert Glass was created roughly 28 million years ago due to an immense meteor impact that occurred in the barren desert. The heat of this catastrophic event melted sandstone into molten silica which then formed droplets as it cooled down.

These droplets eventually solidified over millions of years resulting in the formation of Libyan Desert Glass. This material is incredibly rare; only two sites have ever been recorded where one can find these pieces of natural art—the Great Sand Sea in Egypt and Jebel Uweinat on the border between Libya and Sudan.
